The first blog was Links.net, founded by Justin Hall, while he was a Swarthmore College student in 1994. Yes Of course, at that time in 1994, they weren’t called blogs, and Justin Hall just mentioned to it as his personal homepage.

The term “weblog” wasn’t coined until 1997. The word’s creation has been attributed to Jorn Barger, of the influential early blog Robot Wisdom. The term “weblog” was imagined to reflect the process of “logging the web” as he browsed.

The first instance of a blog on a traditional news site when Jonathan Dube blogged Hurricane Bonnie for The Charlotte Observer in 1998.

After then “Weblog” was shortened to “blog” by programmer Peter Merholz in 1999. It’s not until five years later that Merriam-Webster declares it the word their word of the year.

In early days, the original blogs were updated manually and often linked from a primary homepage or archive. This wasn’t very effective, but unless you were a programmer who could build your own custom blogging platform, there weren’t any other options, to start with.

During these early years, a few different “blogging” platforms cropped up. LiveJournal is the most recognizable of the early sites.

And after then, in 1999, the platform was started by Evan Williams and Meg Hourihan at Pyra Labs that would later become Blogger. And Blogger is largely responsible for bringing blogging to the mainstream. Here are the most notable blogging events took place.

  • Sidebar with social profiles, favorite content, or call-to-action widgets.
  • Footer with relevant important links like a disclaimer, privacy policy, contact page, sitemap, about page etc.
